Ruby Language Development

Ruby is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language which supports multiple programming paradigms. It was designed with an emphasis on programming productivity and simplicity. In Ruby, everything is an object, including primitive data types. It was developed in the mid-1990s by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto in Japan.

The name "Ruby"

The Name "Ruby" originated during a chat session between Matsumoto and Keiju Ishitsuka. Two names were selected, "Coral" and "Ruby". Matsumoto chose the later one as it was the birthstone of one of his colleagues.

What is Ruby language

A dynamic, open source programming language with a focus on simplicity and productivity. It has an elegant syntax that is natural to read and easy to write.

Since its public release in 1995, Ruby has drawn devoted coders worldwide. In 2006, Ruby achieved mass acceptance. With active user groups formed in the world’s major cities and Ruby-related conferences filled to capacity.

Ruby’s Flexibility

Ruby is seen as a flexible language, since it allows its users to freely alter its parts. Essential parts of Ruby can be removed or redefined, at will. Existing parts can be added upon. Ruby tries not to restrict the coder.

Features of Ruby Language

  1. Ruby is an open-source and is freely available on the Web, but it is subject to a license.

  2. Ruby is a general-purpose, interpreted programming language.

  3. Ruby is a true object-oriented programming language.

  4. Ruby is a server-side scripting language similar to Python and PERL.

  5. Ruby can be used to write Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripts.

  6. Ruby can be embedded into Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

  7. Ruby has a clean and easy syntax that allows a new developer to learn very quickly and easily.

  8. Ruby has similar syntax to that of many programming languages such as C++ and Perl.

  9. Ruby is very much scalable and big programs written in Ruby are easily maintainable.

  10. Ruby can be used for developing Internet and intranet applications.

  11. Ruby can be installed in Windows and POSIX environments.

  12. Ruby support many GUI tools such as Tcl/Tk, GTK, and OpenGL.

  13. Ruby can easily be connected to DB2, MySQL, Oracle, and Sybase.

  14. Ruby has a rich set of built-in functions, which can be used directly into Ruby scripts.

Ruby Versions

There are many Ruby versions that have been released till date. Current stable Ruby version is 2.4

  1. Version 1.8 (4th Aug, 2003)
